8. Database Listing of Trees
1. Collection Database:
The Stranahan Arboretum's collection of trees has been largely entered into
a database. Each tree placed in the database has its own unique ID
number, stamped in a round metal tag, and affixed to the tree trunk.
Below is that list, with ID number, common name, and scientific name.
Other information available from this database are each tree's GPS location
(longitude and latitude), as well as the tree's height, trunk diameter,
original planting date, and canopy size. Contact the arboretum program
coordinator at
sandra.stutzenstein@utoledo.edu for more information.
Database Volunteer Opportunities:
a. Help is always needed to help keep the database
updated, including adding trees to the database, re-measuring the trees,
etc. Contact the program coordinator for more information.
b. Tree Identification of the trees in our
collection is always needed, in order to identify sub-species. Reference
books and training provided.
2. Virtual Tour Map
One outcome of the new collection database is the
construction of a virtual tour map. the current version is still under
construction, but feel free to view it thus far. Send comments pro and
con to the arboretum program coordinator at sandra.stutzenstein.utoledo.edu.
Please Note: When first downloading the
virtual map file, do not be concerned with a request to download
Chinese-type software to operate. As part of the University of Toledo,
we have many students participating in our projects. The student who built
this virtual tour map has Chinese as his first language. The download
will not damage/harm your computer.

3. Studying Plant Communities Over Time (SPOT): A
delayed mowing program studying plant community change over
time and its effects on the urban landscape's environment.
4. Lysimeter Project: A brownfield research project
studying how plants can remove toxic waste from soil. Dr.
Daryl Dwyer
5. Weather Station: One of many stations world wide
monitoring climate. Dr. Jiquan Chen.
6. Ground Sensors: Recording soil moisture and climate.
Dr. Alison Spongberg.
7. Groundwater Wells: Used to measure
groundwater in Oak Openings perched water table. Dr.
James Marten-Hayden
